Friday, February 4, 2011: Black Sabbath - Into The Void

It's Friday

It's the weekend

It's about time we went Into The Void

Escape from brainwashed minds and pollution

Leave the earth to all it's sin and hate

Find another world where freedom waits

Let's go

Thursday, February 3, 2011: Destroyer - Kaputt

Can I just say, I love IKEA?

There is very little I would rather do than wander around an IKEA store dreaming about how much better my life would be if my house contained every single piece of furniture that IKEA sells.

I like the clean lines, the sparse surfaces, the simple European design.

See, I've been walking around furniture stores here in the states, and God-In-Heaven is American furniture ugly. Big, bulky, sometimes lined with hideous gold trim, it usually is a nightmare to behold.

I appreciate that a lot of people don't like the assemblage aspect of IKEA furniture, but for me that's a bonus. That's because I've moved a lot in my life; sometimes across town, once across state lines, and a couple of times across the globe.

In every instance of moving, I was thankful that I had furniture that disassembled before you moved it.

I love IKEA.

This has nothing to do with today's song, btw, just some thoughts I decided to share.

Have a great Thursday!

Wednesday, February 2, 2011: The "Four Decades Of Summer" Edition

Since I missed my usual TWOfer Tuesday, how about a FOURfer Wednesday?

No, it doesn't have the same ring to it, but work with me here.

It's February. The bleak mid-winter.

Chances are, unless you are south of the equator, you're cold.  Real cold. You might even be going through a severe winter storm. And Spring, while only around the corner, seems a million miles away.

I'm guessing you are ready for some summer. A summer for the ages.

Let's dream about that, shall we, by listing to songs about summer. Through the ages.

1950's

Topping the charts at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 29, 1958, we'll start with one of Rock & Roll's greatest voices, and guitarists, and his hip take on what makes summer a drag.

1960's

New York's own Lovin' Spoonful takes us back to when nights were a different world from the days. Listen to the sounds of the car horns and jackhammers, and know that where the snow lies now, road works are just around the corner

1970's

When people talk about great guitarists, why isn't Ernie Isley's name at the top of everyone's list? I mean, he has a sound that is as unique and instantly recognizable as Duane Eddy, and has chops to die for. If you need to warm up, just keep replaying this track's killer solo, and I'm sure you'll be burning up in no time

1980's

How 'bout we wrap this up with hot chicks having fun? Summer wouldn't be summer without hot chicks.

Have fun!

Tuesday, February 1, 2011: Vieux Farka Touré - Fafa

I believe that there exists far more than simply what we can taste, touch, see and hear.

I believe that our senses can limit us more than they release us.

And songs like Fafa from musicians like Vieux Farka Touré only serve to reinforce my beliefs.

Music this beautiful isn't just created, it is inspired from something beyond us.

Don't just listen to this song, be immersed in it

Monday, January 31, 2011: Happy Mondays - Step On

KHAALL THAHH KKHHOOOPPPSSS!!!!!

One of my friends on facebook posts this song pretty frequently.

I mean, it's a back and forth between this being a too obvious Monday morning song, to this being a sly nod and a knowing wink making fun of Monday morning song. If that makes any sense.

Which it probably doesn't.

Which is fine becasue, I guess at the heart of it, Step On just a fun, totally bitchin' song.

Without having to think about it too much. And who wants to do all that "thinking" on a Monday morning anyway?

It's just twisting my melon, man

Saturday, January 29, 2011: Lower Dens - I Get Nervous

"It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. And this bag was, like, dancing with me. Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. And that's the day I knew there was this entire life behind things, and... this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in."
