Thursday, February 23, 2012: Massive Attack - Teardrop

It's been recently announced that one of my favourite TV Series, the glorious House, won't be back after Season 8.

That's a huge drag, because I love House. Of course, the individual storylines tended to be pretty formulaic: patient has symptoms, House and team argue over treatment while House makes biting, sarcastic remarks, treatments don't work and patient gets progressively worse, people argue and/or panic a bit until House (or someone, but usually House) has a brilliant Eureka moment and swoops in with an unlikely and often dangerous but successful cure just in the nick of time. Rinse and repeat.

So, while that is usually fine, and would make for a good show in general, what elevated House from any other common medical drama was House himself. Hugh Laurie absolutely owned that role. The brilliant, battered and bitter genius of House was, really, the sole reason to watch the show. He owned that role so completely it was unreal.

Especially if you had only known him from previous comedic roles like Bertie Wooster in Jeeves and Wooster, or any of a number of bumbling characters in Blackadder.

That said, however, I'm sure all good things must come to an end, including television shows.

It's probably better too, let's be honest, before House decides to run off to race motorcycles or run a used bookstore or gets a bunch of goofy roommates and hilarity ensues.

So, here's to House. Thank you for all the great lines, and the great lives, you've brought to life.
