Thursday, June 13, 2024: Otis Day & The KnIghts - Shama Lama Ding Dong

"Wait till Otis sees us. He LOVES us!"

Now, remember the ground rules for this week, the band had to be a fictional band, it couldn't have existed in any form before the said movie or T.V. performance.

For today's entry, Otis Day and the Knights was a fictional R&B band shown performing in the 1978 movie National Lampoon's Animal House.

However, the twist in this story is that, following the success of the film, DeWayne Jessie, the actor playing the group's lead singer, acquired the rights to the band's name and created a real musical act that toured and recorded an album during the 1980s.  Wikipedia

Wednesday, March 20, 2024: Andra Day - Rise Up

You might have seen her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lee Daniels' biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday.  If you haven't, run don't walk to find that film and watch it.  Go ahead, we'll wait.

In 2015, she released her debut album, Cheers to the Fall.  According to Wikipedia, Day explained that the song was written after one of her close friend had been diagnosed with cancer. She described it as a "a sort of prayer."

It's a powerhouse of a performance, and a knockout punch of a song, and just the right thing we need to get our spirits lifted during these trying times.

There is hope out there, friends, I promise.

How do I know?  Because people like Andra Day exist. And they create.  And they perform.  And they lift us up.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011: The 8th Day - She's Not Just Another Woman

Here's a example number #3,459 of the "Why Don't They Write Them Like THIS Anymore?" files.

Here a song to douse those mid-week blues, so break out the flares, the banana seated Schwinn and the 8 track for the 8th day.

Dedicated to the one I love.

She's not just another woman.

Friday, September 10, 2010: Morris Day and The Time - Jungle Love

Movie week is coming to a close tomorrow, so let's party like it's 1999. In, uh, 2010.

I can't think of a better Friday Movie Song right now than this.

And, if you're late to the party, don't worry, the action really starts at 1:54.

If that doesn't bring a smile to your face and get you up and dancing around, you have no pulse.  Go immediately the Emergency Ward, 'cause you must be gone.

Sure, it was Prince's movie, but you and I both know that the The-Artist-Formerly-Known-As-The-Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Prince was upstaged in pretty much every scene with Morris Day and his entourage.

Well, ok.  Them and Appolonia.

Ok, he was upstaged by pretty much everyone.

Have a great weekend.
