Monday, March 19, 2012: The Staple Singers - Respect Yourself (Live)

re·spect  [ri-spekt] noun

1. esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability: I have great respect for her judgment.

2. deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment: respect for a suspect's right to counsel; to show respect for the flag; respect for the elderly.

3. the condition of being esteemed or honored: to be held in respect.

This week, make sure the respect starts with you.

Because if you don't respect yourself, ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot.

Tuesday, March 1, 2011: The Twilight Singers - Blackbird And The Fox

March, 2011

Let's start out a new month with some new music.

While the name The Twilight Singers immediately conjures up rows of sparkly, sun-drenched, angst-ridden vampires warbling show tunes, I assure you that this is something quite different, and infinitely cooler.

The group was originally formed as a side project by Greg Dulli, lead singer for The Afghan Whigs, in 1997. After the Whigs disbanded The Twilight Singers became his main gig.

And what a gig. Just like the Whigs, this is seriously fabulous music.

Unlike the Whigs, however, I hope this project gets the recognition it's deserves.

Off their brand spankin' new album Dynamite Steps, here is their collaboration with the amazing Ani DiFranco.

Enjoy.  Over and over again, once you put this on your playlist, I assure this tune won't leave for a while.
