Monday, October 14, 2024: Blondie - Maria

 

I recently rediscovered this absolute banger, courtesy of one of the greatest bands ever.

Released as a single from their seventh album, No Exit (1999), this was Blondie's first new release since 1982.  Over twenty years apart from 1978s Parallel Lines album, Maria and No Exit marked a powerful and confident return to form for the band.  

It's the perfect Monday morning jam, smack out the rhythm on your dashboard, scream those wonderful high notes like you were the Queen of New Wave herself.  Or just move like you don't care, smooth as silk, cool as air.

Here's to Maria, and a million and one candle lights.

Monday, July 9, 2012: It's TELEPHONE WEEK on CSOTD!

On July 9, 1877, Alexander Graham Bell a several others founded the first telephone company, 'Bell Telephone Company', in Boston, Massachusetts.

To celebrate that occasion (obviously working under the "any excuse for a party" clause), we here at CSOTD decided to hereby dedicate this as TELEPHONE WEEK. A full week devoted to cool tunes about our most popular form of communication.

And, kicking it off in grand pop/punk style is a band that defines cool.  So much cool, in fact, that we just couldn't bring ourselves to pick only one.

You know we couldn't leaving you hanging like that.  Enjoy.

Monday, October 18, 2010: Blondie - X Offender

I'd like to start the week with a song that evokes the sound of those great Phil Spector Girl Groups, but with a post-modern, almost punk take on sexuality.

Maybe something that starts with a direct rip-off of My Boyfriends Back by The Angels but descends into pure erotic fetisization, like singing about a prostitute openly flirting with her arresting officer.

But where, I ask you, where would I find such a song? What group, pray tell, could pull off such a wonderful concoction?
