Tuesday, August 13, 2024: TWOfer Tuesday - The "Ramblin Man" Edition

Lord, I was born a Ramblin Man.   Whether you are a Southern Rocker, or prefer Downtempo Electronic Chill, I think everyone has a heart for ramblin. Getting on and getting out there.

The theme for today is that mindset of constantly wanting to be on the move and unable to settle down.  Wanderlust.  Restlessness.

Sometimes it's romantic: Oh the places you'll go.

Sometimes, it's lonely, that bittersweet nature of a life spent anchor-less and drifting.

All I know is that I would rather be in the mountains, or the desert, or a seashore, than behind a desk at 8:00 am every morning.

So, here's the all the ramblers in the world.  Let's get ramblin'.

Tuesday, November 29, 2011: The Righteous Brothers - (You're My) Soul & Inspiration

I went to a wedding reception once where the DJ actually played You've Lost That Loving Feeling.

I mean, honestly. I confronted him on it, I asked, "Don't you think this song is really inappropriate for a wedding reception?"

He looked at me like I was from Mars. "I've never really thought about it before", he finally replied, "People just dig it. It's a jam, you know?"

Yeah, I know. But I totally think that if I ever got asked to DJ a wedding, I would definitely include me some Righteous Brothers - but certainly not that song.

Certainly this one, though.

Enjoy.

Monday, March 7, 2011: The Allman Brothers Band - Ain't Wasting Time No More

On October 29, 1971, Duane Allman, guitarist and co-founder of the southern rock group The Allman Brothers Band, was killed in a motorcycle accident.

The the relatively newly formed Allman Brothers had only recently released the instant classic album Live at Filmore East.

After Allman's funeral and some weeks of mourning, the five surviving members of the Allman Brothers Band decided to carry on, resumed live performances and finished the recording work interrupted by Duane's death. That album was Eat A Peach, which became one of the defining albums of Southern Rock. And it kicked off with this track.

Though written before Duane's death, it is a timeless reminder of the fragility of this life, and the absolute insistence that each moment needs to be lived as if it is your last.

Because, gentle readers, one moment will be. And we will never know when that one moment will knock on our doors.

Yes, heavy thoughts for a Monday, but be joyful gentle reader, because if you are reading this, and listening to this wonderfully cool music then, chances are, you still have moments left.

Don't waste them.

Wednesday, February 2, 2011: The "Four Decades Of Summer" Edition

Since I missed my usual TWOfer Tuesday, how about a FOURfer Wednesday?

No, it doesn't have the same ring to it, but work with me here.

It's February. The bleak mid-winter.

Chances are, unless you are south of the equator, you're cold.  Real cold. You might even be going through a severe winter storm. And Spring, while only around the corner, seems a million miles away.

I'm guessing you are ready for some summer. A summer for the ages.

Let's dream about that, shall we, by listing to songs about summer. Through the ages.

1950's

Topping the charts at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 29, 1958, we'll start with one of Rock & Roll's greatest voices, and guitarists, and his hip take on what makes summer a drag.

1960's

New York's own Lovin' Spoonful takes us back to when nights were a different world from the days. Listen to the sounds of the car horns and jackhammers, and know that where the snow lies now, road works are just around the corner

1970's

When people talk about great guitarists, why isn't Ernie Isley's name at the top of everyone's list? I mean, he has a sound that is as unique and instantly recognizable as Duane Eddy, and has chops to die for. If you need to warm up, just keep replaying this track's killer solo, and I'm sure you'll be burning up in no time

1980's

How 'bout we wrap this up with hot chicks having fun? Summer wouldn't be summer without hot chicks.

Have fun!

Wednesday, August 18, 2010: The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter #23

Originally written and performed by Shuggie Otis, today's CSOTD is a cool drink of 70's funky soul from The Brothers Johnson.

If I need to explain to you why this song is cool, then we'll need to say goodbye now.  It's good that we got this misunderstanding sorted out so soon, and let me direct you to This Lovely Blog About Knitting
