Monday, May 7, 2012: Grease - Summer Nights

Put on that sunscreen, put up those shades and rejoice,
it's SUMMER WEEK!

Ok, so I know it's about the dead center of Spring, but from where I'm sitting, it feels like summer.

And why not celebrate that? If Spring represents birth (or rebirth), then Summer means we get down to really living. We get outside, we swim, we dance late into the warm nights, we sweat and crumple under the heat, we get Vitamin D is truckloads, we tend gardens and have BBQ's. Summer is living.

And, oh, those Summer Nights.

Which brings us to Summer Week's first selection. Cool often doesn't mean classic, and classic doesn't necessarily mean cool. And, more often than not, both cool and classic rarely equals fun.

And that's the dirty little secret about cool songs. Sure, we don't really dwell on it because deep down, in places we don't talk about at parties, too often we listen to cool music with a kind of aloof detachment. It's very rare that we actually bang out the rhythm of a cool song on our dashboard in traffic. Or get up and dance.

Which is what makes this track from Grease so wonderful. It is fun. It is classic. And God In His Heaven, it is cool. The musical triumvirate.

Let the dancing, and the summer, begin!
