Thursday, June 13, 2024: Otis Day & The KnIghts - Shama Lama Ding Dong

"Wait till Otis sees us. He LOVES us!"

Now, remember the ground rules for this week, the band had to be a fictional band, it couldn't have existed in any form before the said movie or T.V. performance.

For today's entry, Otis Day and the Knights was a fictional R&B band shown performing in the 1978 movie National Lampoon's Animal House.

However, the twist in this story is that, following the success of the film, DeWayne Jessie, the actor playing the group's lead singer, acquired the rights to the band's name and created a real musical act that toured and recorded an album during the 1980s.  Wikipedia

Monday, March 12, 2012: Shuggie Otis: Me and My Woman

Welcome to: "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME" Week

I've been doing this humble blog for some time now, gentle reader, and while I do love what I do here, I have to confess that lately I've been feeling a bit unappreciated. Yes, I know that I am loved, and I know that many out there got my back. But I just don't think too many understand what really goes into this blog - hours of slaving away over songs and videos, days worrying about if I got a good balance of tunes, genres and ages of music. It's some hard graft, let me tell you.

So, I'm going to get a bit selfish for now, and just have a whole week devoted to me.

Songs about me.

Well, songs about me and some of the people, places and things that I love.

But, you know, mostly about me.

To kick things off we have some epic rhythm and blues from my man, Shuggie Otis. He's singing about my two favorite things in the entire world. Me. And my woman.

But mostly me.

Take it away!

CSOTD Bonus Edition: Otis Redding - White Christmas

The second post at the beginning of CSOTD was a live version of I Can't Turn You Loose by Otis Redding.

I said on that blog that someone wanted me to define cool, I would first point them to Miles Davis. But, the close second would be that Otis Redding performance.

Otis remains, for me, one of the Titans Of Cool. And that performance set the standard of this blog. I confess, I've been struggling to live up to that level of cool ever since that post.

So, therefore, it's fitting that we end the year as we started this blog, with the epic soul of Otis Redding.

I mean, who else could turn this stale, staid Irving Berlin tune into over flowing river of cool?

Only Otis, baby, only Otis.

Tuesday, August 10, 2010: Otis Redding - I Can't Turn You Loose

Performed live in 1966 on the British TV show "Ready, Steady, Go".

If someone wanted me to define cool, I would first point them to Miles Davis.
But, the close second would be this Otis Redding performance. Cool is everywhere, from Otis himself, his voice, his huge stage presence, that suit, his backing band on scaffolding (very cool), go go dancers (sexy cool), the whole British audience trying desperately to keep time (funny cool), cool saturates this performance.

Seriously, If THIS does not get your toes tapping, your spirit lifted and your frown turned upside down, then you have no soul, no character, and you are not worth knowing.

That is all.
