Thursday, April 21, 2011: Patsy Cline - The Tennessee Waltz
Elvis Presley said that the classic "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was probably the saddest song he'd ever heard.
It's close, but I reckon todays selection is sadder.
Originally a multi-million seller for Patti Page in 1950, I've instead chosen to focus on one of my favourite singers ever, the legendary Patsy Cline.
I was going to do a TWOfer Tuesday about Ms Cline, but I just couldn't bring myself to limit it to just two songs. Seriously, I was even contemplating a Patsy Cline theme week here on CSOTD. And, I still just might!
But, until that day, or even week, arrives, I felt I needed to share some true country, a true classic, and about the most heart-wrenchingly pure and perfect voice ever captured on tape.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Miss Patsy Cline.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011: The 8th Day - She's Not Just Another Woman
Here's a example number #3,459 of the "Why Don't They Write Them Like THIS Anymore?" files.
Here a song to douse those mid-week blues, so break out the flares, the banana seated Schwinn and the 8 track for the 8th day.
Dedicated to the one I love.
She's not just another woman.

Tuesday, April 19, 2011: TWOfer Tuesday - The "Glad To Lend A Helping Hand" Edition
Cool Song Of The Day is becoming a world-wide phenomenon!
Well, no, not really, but we have been contacted recently by several bands who have stumbled across my humble blog and asked if we could put up their songs.
I immediately said, "Of course not, how dare you think that shameless self-promotion will get you anywhere in this world! Success only comes through raw talent and divine inspiration and only then, when people recognize your genius, then you will taste the fruits of success you so long for. Now, humbly return to your pathetic practice space and meditate on what truly matters in this world, and re-align your goals to harmonize with the values of true success!"
Then, there was a long awkward pause while they looked at me like I was a mental patient, and then they asked, "Please will you play our songs?"
And, of course, under such pressure I relented.
First up is a band from Manchester called City Reign.
Here is their Myspace page (God, is Myspace still around?)
Daybreak is their latest single. Their debut single "Making Plans" was released in September through their own label Car Boot Records. According to the band, "Its received air play on XFM and BBC6, Steve Lamacq also featured us on bands to look out for as part of his In The City show." Whatever the hell that means.
But, still I think this is a catchy little ditty and I do wish them success.
Next up is one of my favourite bands I've had the pleasure of discovering here on CSOTD, The Boxing Lesson.
Hopefully, you will check out their song "Dark Side Of The Moog" which I blogged about back in November. That track is just about one of the most perfect songs I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
I was contacted by their new manager and asked to promote a new song of theirs called "Three"
According to the manager, "It's an upbeat electronic number and the video shows us running around Austin dressed as cats having fun with acoustic guitars, synthesizers and tambourines"
And, hell, any band willing to dress up as cats and have fun with guitars, synthesizers and tambourines gets an OK from me. More than happy to promote this band.
Here is their Band Camp site: http://theboxinglesson.bandcamp.com/
And their Myspace (!) page: http://www.myspace.com/theboxinglesson
And, just as a last note: Please, where ever you are, please go out and support local bands, and local music scenes. It is important that places to practice and places to play are kept alive, especially by smaller, up and coming bands.
Who knows who you might discover out there!
