Saturday, February 4, 2012: Minnie Riperton - Loving You

And so we bid goodbye and farewell to Nick Littrell, our very first guest presenter.

Nick unfortunately couldn't be here with us today, he's making plans to propose to his girlfriend.

Since he does work in IT, we can all be a little bit worried about how, exactly, he is going to pop the question. I did ask if he had any ideas, and he said he did, he was thinking about somehow using Angry Birds.

Good God.

Anyway. As the bonds of winter somewhat begin to loosen their grip, the days are getting longer, Valentines Day is on the horizon and spring is getting closer to being in the air. Love is also in the air, I am here to confirm.

We wish Nick and his newly betrothed much happiness, and of course we can best sum up our best wishs and feelings for all of you, gentle readers, with one of the greatest, most pure love songs ever recorded.

Here's to the lovers - you truly make the world go round.

Friday, February 3, 2012: The J. Giles Band - I Do

It's the penultimate day here on Guest Presenter Week - and I'm happy to welcome back Nick Littrell, our very first guest presenter.

CSOTD: So, Nick, what brings you back to our humble blog?

Nick: Stay away from my girlfriend.

CSOTD: Wait, what?

Nick: I heard about yesterday's little talk you guys had. OK, so she has much better taste in music than I do, big whoop. But, I'll tell you something - we've been listening to music together this week and it just hit me how wonderful she is, she really is. I thought that I would try to take this to the next level. I've been thinking about it, and I'm going to ask her to marry me. I was out late last night getting the ring, so I don't have any song for today.

CSOTD: That's great news. What I can do for you is try to choose a song with a bit of a subliminal message for her, try to get her in the mood for saying yes. With that in mind, I think I'll pull out this cool classic from one of the greatest good-time bands ever. Kicking off what is sure to be an eventful weekend, here's the J. Giles Band with "I Do".

Happy Friday, everybody!

Nick: And stay away from my girlfriend.

Thursday, February 2, 2012: Brook Benton - Rainy Night in Georgia

It's day four here on Guest Presenter Week - and Nick Littrell, our very first guest presenter, still isn't here.

But, for this morning, we do have his girlfriend Gwen on the phone:

CSOTD: Thanks for calling in.

Gwen: Yeah, well, I just wanted to apologize for Nick. He really, really loves Hot Action Cop, and he was really hurt when you said those things.

CSOTD: And what about you? Big fan?

Gwen: Uh, not so much *laughs*. He said that he wasn't coming on your blog anymore, but I know he was supposed to be there the whole week, and I thought that was kind of unfair, so I wondered if I could chose a song instead.

CSOTD: Yes, absolutely, what did you have in mind?

Gwen: What about Rainy Night In Georgia by Brooke Benton, is that cool enough?

CSOTD: Wow, absolutely. You've got great taste in music, maybe we should have asked you to chose our songs this week! You sound really cute too. Do you have any pictures you could send to us? You know, for the blog. We could put up your picture with today's song.

Nick: Uh, don't push it.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012: Hall & Oates - Sara Smile

It's day three here on Guest Presenter Week - and we're with Nick Littrell, our very first guest presenter.

Or not. Actually, after our little fall out yesterday, Nick hasn't returned my calls, and his voicemail says that he's going to be in meetings all day today.

Yeah. Right.

Be that as it may, the blog must go on, so we will do what we can to continue to bring you the coolness until I can patch things up with Nick.

In the meantime, please enjoy this stone cold slice of cool from 1976, from one of the most soulful duos ever. Your kiss is on their list, and this song will forever be in our hearts, it's Hall and Oats.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012: Ivory Joe Hunter - Since I Met You Baby

It's day two here on Guest Presenter Week - and we're with Nick Littrell, our very first guest presenter.

CSOTD: What do you have for us today, Nick?

Nick: Hot Action Cop - Fever For The Flava!

CSOTD: Wait, what?

Nick: From Need For Speed! God, I played that game for DAYS, dude, days. "I got the green glow unda my car!, I got the boom, boom...something something something something..."

CSOTD: Nick, we can't blog Fever For The Flava by Hot Action Cop. It's not a cool song, Nick. In fact, it kinda sucks. It's derivative frat boy background music for every kegger party that took place in 2003.

Nick: Oh, God. Whatever. Do what you want.

CSOTD: I think I'll use this as a teachable moment here. How about you listen to the 1956 blues staple Since I Met You Baby by Ivory Joe Hunter? See, Nick, that's a COOL song. That's more what we're going for here.  Take it away, Ivory Joe, show us what cool really is.

Monday, January 30, 2012: David Bowie - Modern Love

It's Guest Presenter Week on Cool Song Of The Day!

This is a new feature where people other than me get to decide what's cool.

For our inaugural Guest Presenter Week, we have Nick Littrell. Nick actually works in the IT department at my "day job", and he told me he was a huge fan of music. And he owes me a favor.

CSOTD: Good morning and welcome to Cool Song Of The Day!

Nick: Great to be here.

CSOTD: The first song you've chosen Modern Love by David Bowie. Tell us why.

Nick: Well, because I'm a modern guy, I'm here with my modern cell phone, I have a job in IT. And, I like songs about having sex with robots.

CSOTD: Wait, what?

Nick: Modern Love - it's about having sex with robots, right?

CSOTD: Uh, no. Have you even listened to the lyrics? Pretty sure it's more about struggling with the fears and anxieties accompanying a failed relationship, but also on a deeper level what it means to exist without love in life, and how some search for meaning through organized religion but that only leads to empty satisfaction.

Nick: Whatever.

CSOTD: Anyway....We're huge fan's of Bowie here on CSOTD, so whatever you read into it, it's definitely a cool song, and a great way to start the week. Enjoy.
