Friday, January 24, 2025: Devo - Girl U Want

It's the summer of 1980. If you're in West Covina, California, you're either hanging out at the mall (either the West Covina Fashion Plaza, Eastland Mall, or Puente Hills Mall), or the Airplane Park (if you know, you know), skateboarding through the City Hall complex, or you're rockin' it over at Skate Junction.

Good times. With Devo making it even cooler.

Thursday, January 23, 2025: Kelsea Ballerini - Love Me Like You Mean It

Straight outta Knoxville, Tennessee,Kelsea Ballerini does modern Country right, blending traditional country sounds with pop influences but never being lazy or pandering about either.

"Love Me Like You Mean It," was the debut single from her debut studio album, The First Time (2015), which found immediate and well deserved recognition, making Kelsea the first female artist since Carrie Underwood to send a debut single to the top of the Country Airplay chart.

Modern Country gets a lot of flack, and rightly so mostly, but there are some stand-out artists that truly deserve to be held up above the norm, Kelsea Ballerini absolutely being one of those.

Tuesday, January 21, 2025: TWOfer Tuesday - The "I'm A Morally Ambiguous Detective From The 1980s" Edition

I'm not gonna lie, I'm getting pretty tired of this timeline.

Some days, I like to close my eyes, drift off, and imagine that I'm a morally ambiguous detective from the 1980s.  In my white sport jacket, driving some cool Italian sports car.

And Lazerhawk provides the absolute perfect soundtrack for these daydreams.

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Lazerhawk (real name Garrett Hays) is one of the key figures in the retro-futuristic music movement. His sound often blends cinematic synth melodies, driving rhythms, and neon-drenched vibes, making his music a favorite for fans of retro sci-fi, video games, and cyberpunk aesthetics.

His albums showcase a mix of high-energy tracks and atmospheric soundscapes. His work is often associated with themes of adventure, dystopian futures, and nostalgic storytelling.

Perfect for hitting those white powder fueled nights in Miami in 1987.

Let's go catch some bad guys.  By any means necessary.

Monday, January 20, 2025: Gil Scott-Heron - Revolution Will Not Be Televised

"It is a sad fact that because of comfort, complacency, a morbid fear of communism, and our proneness to adjust to injustice, the Western nations that initiated so much of the revolutionary spirit of the modern world have now become the arch antirevolutionaries. This has driven many to feel that only Marxism has a revolutionary spirit. Therefore, communism is a judgment against our failure to make democracy real and follow through on the revolutions that we initiated. Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go out into a sometimes hostile world declaring eternal hostility to poverty, racism, and militarism. With this powerful commitment we shall boldly challenge the status quo and unjust mores, and thereby speed the day when “every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain."

Saturday, January 18, 2025: Tinariwen – Sastanàqqàm

That heavy, fuzzy guitar, tho.  Plus, that bass...........

Tinariwen are Nomadic musicians from the Saharan region of northwest Africa.  They call their style of music desert blues and I'm 100% here for it. The collective first convened in the late 1970s and released their first studio album in the early 1990s. They began touring internationally in the early 2000s.

I swear that if more people played music, if more people performed music, and if more people got out of their comfort zones and actually listened to different types of music, the world would be such a better place.
