Monday, June 10, 2024: Josie and the Pussycats - 3 Small Words

It's FICTIONAL BAND WEEK this week on CSOTD!

Seriously, these Theme Weeks are my favorite posts on this blog, and I know this week is going to be so much fun.  Yes, we're taking a break from reality because, honestly, have you been outside lately?

I know, right?  How about, this week, let's all just stay in and enjoy some of the best songs from bands that don't really exist.  At least, for the most part, not outside of movies and television.

Now, some ground rules:  The bands have to be fictional.  Meaning, if it's a real band that is just playing at being a fictional band, then it's a No Go.

An example of this would be the 80s movie band Eddie and the Cruisers.

The movie of Eddie and The Cruisers was pretty great, and the 1983 hit "On The Dark Side" remains a banger, to this day.  But the reality was that Eddie and the Cruisers was actually Rhode Island's own John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band.  A full on, actual, gigging band before Eddie was even a thought on a script writers notepad.  So, while great, they are disqualified from this week.

Know who are not disqualified? The above mentioned Josie and The Pussycats.

A full nine years before Instagram came out, Josie and The Pussycats were the most Instagramable band to ever Instagram before Instagram was even a thing.   See also, the arthouse movie classic Paris, Texas.

Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid star in this 2001 adaptation of the old Hanna Barbara cartoon (and Archies comic book stars).  The trio of talented but as yet unknown musicians are tempted with an offer of fame and fortune.  But, could it be part of a bigger, creepier plan to control the world?

JATP never takes itself too seriously, but still manages to dig into some deep themes about consumerism, greed, art and commerce, and its overall satirical take on American pop culture still resonates to this day.  The film has rightly earned it current cult status. Plus, 3 Small Words is still a banger, too, innit.

Enjoy.
