Mumming is a form of folk performance or play with roots in medieval Europe, often involving masked or costumed participants.
In 1418 a law was passed in London forbidding in the city "mumming, plays, interludes or any other disguisings with any feigned beards, painted visors, deformed or coloured visages in any wise, upon pain of imprisonment".
Thank God, then, that Canadian musician, composer, and singer Loreena McKennitt waited until late in the 20th century before releasing her haunting, hypnotic, and beautiful musings about this ancient tradition.
