Monday, July 30, 2012: Cornershop ft Bubbley Kaur & M.I.A.: United Provinces Of India

It's Olympics Week on CSOTD!

Well, sort of.  I wanted to do a themed week about the Olympics, and my first thought was going to be a week about sports and songs associated with sports.

But, honestly, what would that really look like?  We Are The Champions by Queen, Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor & Rock & Roll Pt 2 by Gary Glitter?  No thank you.

So, instead, we'll use this week as a musical tribute to some of the countries that are participating in the London 2012 Olympics.  And, fittingly enough, first up is India. (All Olympic information is courtesy of The Telegraph, and their excellent Olympics Country Profile page).

Best Sports:  Used to dominate in hockey, winning 8 golds between 1928 and 1980. More recently have scored highly in shooting.

Star Performers:  Abhinav Bindra won gold in the 10m air rifle in Beijing and will be hoping for more in London. Leander Paes and Sania Mirza could combine to make a formidable partneship in the women's doubles on the Wimbledon grass, with hopes also set on their hockey team refinding their dominant form of yester year. Badminton pair Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won women's double bronze at the 2011 World Championships and look fancied for a medal.

Olympic medal history: 9 Gold, 4 Silver, 7 Bronze

Olympic debut: 1900

Total Games appearances: 22
