Friday, October 12, 2012: Duran Duran - Rio
Duran Duran really got a bad rap in the 80's. For a lot of reasons.
Even at the time I thought it was unfair, but as I've matured and gained more knowledge about music, musicianship, songwriting and performing, I've got to tell you, these guys are the top tier.
And none more so that bassist John Taylor. He puts the funk into New Wave in ways that just shouldn't work. At all. He manages to out play Level 42 without being as knowingly pretentious, and can fit in some lighting riffs without breaking out of the pocket.
I mean, just this once, listen to the bass playing in this song. Out-frickin'-standing.
And that's what the best bassists are about - contributing to the song, laying the foundation, keeping the heartbeat without being overly mechanical, or boring. And all, probably, without most people noticing.
Except those who truly listen. Like you, gentle reader. We know you're listening.
And enjoying. Happy Friday, everyone.
