Friday, September 17, 2010: Justice - DVNO
Hardly anyone gets the 80's right. Truth. I thought The Wedding Singer was atrocious.
I came of age in the 80's, I know the 80's. I lived it.
The 50's were huge in the 80's. 50's diners were everywhere. My mother grew up in the 50's. I'll always remember her telling me how much the 50's sucked. The Red Scare, duck and cover and the bomb, McCarthyism, polio, segregation, cultural repression, she hated it.
Somehow I've always understood that most people get the 50's wrong. I'm sure I can't pinpoint exactly which details are wrong and why, but I've always known that how people look at the 50's, or how they remember the 50's, is quite different than how it must have felt actually living through them.
Now the same violence is being done to the 80's. My 80's.
Which brings us to this video. French electronic music duo Justice actually have a very good go at getting that 80's look right. They use their tune about all the nightclubs where the details make the girls sweat as a perfect launching pad to showcase some pretty awesome 80's logo flashbacks.
And how did they manage to get the look so right? They stole it, of course. Genius.
There are several really good blogs out there which can point out the inspirations for each logo. But, for me, it's more fun to just let the memories fly by, having each design bring up another long gone memory of some mall, a TV show, or an album I had back in the day.
Which would all be for nothing if the song itself was sour. But this, friends, is a fine Friday song with all the attitude you need for getting dressed up, going out to those fabled clubs, looking the doorman straight into the eye and telling him, "No need to ask my name to figure out how cool I am."
Then walking right in.
Go ahead, make those girls sweat.
